Apply to be a full-time publishing intern with Catapult and Soft Skull Press in New York for Spring/Summer 2019
Catapult (books.catapult.co) is seeking one full-time (40 hours/week) publishing intern to provide support to our books team in the New York City office. This is a paid position.
Duties will vary day-to-day, but we rely on our interns for time-sensitive, essential work. We have hired six previous interns to in-house staff positions, and proudly strive to help all of our exemplary interns with their job searches upon completing the internship with us.
Typical weekly duties will always include packing and mailing ARCs, finished copies, and other promotional materials — these mailings may not be glamorous, but they are vital to our books’ success, and so require someone who is detail- and process-oriented.
Our interns will also help with research, copy editing, and various administrative tasks across the company’s editorial, publicity, marketing, classes, production, and publishing departments. Interns will work closely with a variety of talented, motivated, and creative people to gain hands-on experience at one of the largest independent publishers today.
The ideal candidate will be exceptionally organized, open to constructive feedback, enthusiastic, efficient, a clear communicator, interested in learning the business of publishing, self-managed, able to work well in a fast-paced environment, passionate about the literary world, knowledgeable about media outlets (diverse and niche interest knowledge is a plus), and comfortable learning new software and systems. Interns must be familiar with Google Drive. InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere experience is a major plus.
The four-to-six month term can begin as early as mid-February 2019 and last through August 2019, allowing the intern to experience an entire season of the publishing calendar. Our interns earn $15/hour. Send cover letter and resume to Elizabeth Ireland at elizabeth.ireland [at] catapult.co by 10 a.m. ET on Friday, February 22nd. Please include “Spring/Summer 2019 Internship” in your subject line.
Applicants should include in their cover letter all scheduling and accessibility requirements. We will invite a select number of internship candidates to take a short marketing test (which will also give you a good sense of the kind of work you’ll be doing with us), and a copy editing and proofreading test.
